AKISI PHOTOGRAPHY RESIDENCY

15TH.06. - 22.06.2025 | EAST COAST, ZANZIBAR

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

The word "Akisi" comes from Swahili, meaning to reflect. True to its name, this residency is envisioned as a moment of pause a space to take a breath, chill, and engage in meaningful exchange.

Dar Foto Festival in partnership with the Spanish Embassy in Tanzania presents Akisi Photography Residency, a creative and educational initiative designed to nurture socially conscious visual storytelling and promote sustainable artistic practices. Akisi invites a cohort of emerging photographers to slow down, reflect, and reimagine their craft.

Set within Zanzibar’s rich cultural heritage and diverse natural landscapes, the residency provides a platform for photographers to reflect, create, and connect. Over seven immersive days, selected residents will work under the guidance of guest photographer Maria Primo (Spain) and Simon Luyenga (Tanzania) to develop a group exhibition that responds to local realities while engaging with global challenges such as climate change, heritage preservation, and social justice.

This is more than just a residency — it's a space for dialogue, experimentation, and impact.
