Coexistence

30 November - 1 December 2024

We are born in a country, we are part of a generation and perhaps a member of a religious group. We exist in our individual reality yet coexist with so many others. What makes and breaks peaceful coexistence where there is diversity?

Tanzania, since its independence in 1961, has made peaceful coexistence a cornerstone of its national identity. The union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar created today’s Tanzania, with KiSwahili (re)born as a unifying language across diverse ethnic groups. Under the first President Julius Nyerere, the principles of ‘Ujamaa’ (extended family) and ‘Uhuru na Umoja’ (Freedom and Unity) shaped the nation’s drive for unity and collective responsibility, establishing Tanzania as a model of peaceful coexistence, despite challenges like migration, social divides, and wildlife conflicts.

This pop-up exhibition was a preview of the 2025 Edition around “Coexistence”, exploring the complexities of peaceful coexistence in Tanzania and beyond, reflecting on how unity and diversity manifest in daily life, architecture, and the balance between human communities and the natural world. It was hosted at Humboldt Forum in Berlin, Germany as part of the Opening of “Histories of Tanzania”.
